Parkinson’s Disease Society Walkathon cum 10th Anniversary Celebration,
2 Sept 2006
Guest of Honor: Mr Khaw Boon Wan, Minister for Health |
Parkinson’s Disease Society (Singapore) celebrated its 10th anniversary this year with a fundraising walkathon cum outdoor celebration at Bishan Park I. This is the first time the Society is organizing a fundraising walkathon in 10 years, and a celebration event of a mammoth scale. It was an overwhelming success with over 500 participants gathering at Bishan Park I on that day to show their support for the Society. Our Society was honoured to have the Health Minister, Mr Khaw Boon Wan, to grace the occasion. Minister Khaw flagged off the walkathon on three different walkathon routes (2km, 1km, and 0.5km) so that participants, regardless of their physical abilities, were able to complete the walkathon at their own pace. With support from families, friends, and volunteers, even those with walking aids and on wheelchairs were able to participate and to complete the walkathon. Everyone had a good time, including the Minister. The Walkathon was followed by a mini carnival and a celebration concert.
Overall, the walkathon cum celebration event was an overwhelming success! It was a healthy, fun and educational event for all. All these would not have been possible if without the support from our generous sponsors, supporting organizations, and friends and volunteers of Parkinson’s Disease Society (Singapore). We were also grateful to our members, their families and members of the public who have donated generously to the Society. Through all your efforts, we are pleased to announce that the Parkinson’s Disease Society (Singapore) had collected $62,000. The funds raised will be used to fund the numerous programmes of the Society, in particular to raise the public awareness of Parkinson’s disease, for educational initiatives, and to empower patients and caregivers who live with this illness. |

Parkinson’s
Disease Public Forum cum Parkinson’s
Disease Society’s Annual
General Meeting 2005 |
Public
forum is an annual event of
the Parkinson’s Disease
Society of Singapore since 1997,
with the objective of raising
public awareness of the disease,
challenges in the disease and
management for people with Parkinson’s
disease. This year, we focus
on “Coping with the Parkinson’s
Disease”. About 200 patients,
caregivers and healthcare providers
attended this public forum held
on 11th September 2005 at the
Tan Tock Seng Hospital’s
Theatrette.
The
Parkinson’s disease nurse
clinician, Ms Lau Puay Ngoh
from the National Neuroscience
Insitute shared with the audience
on how to cope with symptoms
of the disease. She encouraged
people with Parkinson’s
disease to view their problems
as challenges rather than obstacles.
This was followed by consultant
psychiatrist from Tan Tock Seng
Hospital, Dr. Daniel Kwek’s
presentation on coping with
and accepting the diagnosis
of Parkinson’s disease.
The importance of coping with
movements and walking for people
with Parkinson’s disease
was presented by Ms Mahadevi
Barathi, a principal physiotherapist
with Tan Tock Seng Hospital.
During
the forum, the Society launched
its new education book for people
with Parkinson’s disease
entitled “Moving On with
Parkinson’s Disease”
edited by Dr. Louis Tan, a consultant
neurologist with National Neuroscience
Institute. Copies of the book
are obtainable from the Society.
After
the tea break, the Parkinson’s
Disease Society of Singapore
conducted its Annual General
Meeting. About 50 members and
observers were present. The
President’s report was
given by Dr Adrian Tan while
the Treasurer’s report
was presented by Mr Reggie Thein.
This was followed by elections
of new committee members for
the 2005-2006 term. We welcome
new committee members Ms Dawn
Tan and Ms Sharon Lee on board
together with our new President,
Dr Adrian Tan.
An
important Extraordinary General
Meeting was conducted after
this to approve the Constitutional
changes for the Society. These
amendments were necessary to
update the Society’s constitution
as the Society moves into its
second decade of service to
patients with Parkinson’s
disease.

| World
PD Day Farm Tour by the Parkinson’s
Disease Society of Singapore on
16th April 2005 |
|
World
Parkinson’s Disease Awareness
Week was celebrated worldwide
from 11th to 17th April 2005.
In conjunction with this event,
the Parkinson’s Disease
Society of Singapore organised
a day tour on the 16th of April
2005 for individuals with Parkinson’s
disease and their caregivers.
It was a much-awaited day for
patients to visit the goat and
organic vegetables farms. A
total of 42 including 2 toddlers
had an enriching experience
watching the milking of goats,
homogenisation and pasteurisation
of milk. It was an unforgettable
experience for many who enjoyed
feeding the goats. A visit to
the organic farm helped everyone
better understand the types
of fertiliser used by the farmers
to grow vegetables and fruits
that are so fresh and full of
natural nutrients. The tour
ended with a sumptuous lunch
at a Chinese restaurant in town.
Each participant helped each
other to dish out food just
like one big happy family.
Many went home after the
tour not only with bags of
their vegetables, fruits and
goat milk but also with new
friendships made. Many felt
encouraged that they were
able to have a shared experience
on a group tour. The participants
enjoyed it so much that they
requested for another tour
to be organised in the near
future.

New Year Celebration at NNI/TTSH Support
Group Meeting |
|
The
first combined (English &
Mandarin) meeting of 2005 was
the “New Year Celebration”
held on 15th of January. There
were 65 participants and helpers
at this gathering. It was a
time of get-together for patients,
their families, and caregivers
to share their coping experiences,
to “boast” of their
achievements, at the same time
to have fun with the game competitions
and the mouth-watering food
that was catered for them. For
those who joined us for the
first time, many had expressed
their interest to attend future
meetings. Most left with smiling
faces, having made new friends,
and feeling that they are not
alone. |

Around the World for PD |

"Drive
Around the World"
is a non-profit organisation based
in the United States, that uses
long range vehicle expeditions as
a means of raising money for charitable
causes and educating students all
over the world. Their latest expedition,
LONGITUDE, aims to raise funds for
Parkinson's Disease research while
they journey for 9 months across
4 continents and 43 countries.
The Parkinson's Disease Society
of Singapore caught up with the
team when they stopped by Singapore
and visited the NNI on 26 May 2004.
Led by Mr Todd Borgie, Field Educator
with "Drive Around the World",
the team had an enriching

session
with Dr Louis Tan, member of Executive Committee,
Parkinson's Disease Society and Consultant
Neurologist, NNI, together with the Parkinson's
Disease nurse clinician, doctors and member
of the society. |
The group shared their experience
and knowledge in province support
for patients with Parkinson's Disease
and how periodic talks and forums
are useful in educating the public
and its members on the disease and
its related issued. To put a face
to the disease, the team spoke with
some patients to understand the challenges
they encounter in their lives, and
discussed avenues that would help
them come to better terms with their
condition.
Such efforts to raise awareness for
Parkinson's Disease is surely commendable.
We wish the team success in all their
mission.
