Parkinson’s disease support groups are organised specially for patients and their caregivers. The objective of a support group is to provide educational and emotional support to patients with Parkinson’s disease and their families/ caregivers. Support group helps:

1. to promote the patients’ awareness about the challenges of living with Parkinson’s disease.
2. to provide a way for these patients and their families/ caregivers to meet others who are     able to understand the disease.
3. to give patients an opportunity to meet others in similar condition.
4. to replace patients’ negative attitudes with a more realistic understanding of the disease.

Parkinson’s Disease Support Group at Tan Tock Seng Hospital Campus of National Neuroscience Institute

The support group meets monthly on Saturdays, with the English and Chinese group (Mandarin speaking) meeting on alternate months. This support group is managed by the Parkinson’s disease nurse clinician, Nursing Officer Lau Puay Ngoh and assisted by medical social workers and other allied health staff. The meeting starts with ice-breakers followed by the topic of the month. At times, participants break into smaller groups for discussion. Each meeting ends with a time of interaction over refreshments. Below are the meetings scheduled for 2005.
