Working with your healthcare team

Parkinson's disease is a very individual condition and affects everyone differently - if somebody else you know or someone in your family has had Parkinson's disease, do not assume that you will experience the same symptoms or problems. Learn to recognize your own symptoms and share any observations with your doctor and healthcare team. Although you may often feel anxious or discouraged, try not to let others - including your family and your doctors - make important decisions for you.

My appointment with my family doctor

  • When you visit any healthcare professional, it may help to be prepared with a list of questions and concerns and to bring a notebook with you to write down what you are told.
  • Try to establish a good relationship with your team. Ask for and ensure that you get all the help you need to manage your condition.

Possible questions to ask your doctor or Parkinson's specialist
  • How soon am I likely to notice a benefit from my Parkinson's disease medication?
  • Do my medications have any possible side effects?
  • Will my diet or meal times influence the effectiveness of my medication?
  • Would I benefit from seeing a Parkinson's disease specialist?
  • What other therapies are available?
